 Marshall Bruce Mathers III (born on 17 October 1972), known professionally as Eminem (/,emI'nem/; often spelled EMIN3M), is an American artist and producer. His popularity in hip-hop is well-known and he is widely considered as one of the most influential rappers of the past. The worldwide success of Eminem and his critically acclaimed work is widely considered to have broken down racial barriers that prevented white rappers from being accepted as a part of popular music. While much of his transgressive work during the late 1990s and early 2000s was widely condemned, he came to be an icon of the popular angst and despair of the American poor and is cited as an influence for many artists from different genres.After the release of his debut album Infinite (1996) and the extended version of Slim Shady EP (1997), Eminem signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and subsequently achieved the mainstream spotlight in 1999 with the release of The Slim Shady LP. The next two albums, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Eminem Show (2002) were his second.
