David Ortiz, a Dominican-born professional baseball player who is currently worth $55 million, is a Dominican-born former professional player in baseball. David Ortiz is most famous for his time with the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball. He has been a seven-time All-Star player who also holds the Red Sox's single season record for total number of home runs in a single season of 54. In 2005, Ortiz received an award that proclaimed him "the greatest clutch-hitter ever recorded by the Boston Red Sox. "David Ortiz, a.k.a as "Big Papi", was born on November 18, 1975 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He was made an U.S. citizen in Boston on June 11 in 2008. He is the eldest of four children born to Enrique Ortiz and Angela Rosa Arias. He was influenced by the legendary pitcher Ramon Martinez growing up as in addition to Ramon's older brother Pedro Martinez, who is also a famous MLB player for the Red Sox.Ortiz was signed by the Seattle Mariners in November 1992 after he graduated from Estudia Espaillat High School in the Dominican Republic. He was 17 years old when he signed his contract 10 days later. He played for the Mariners farm team, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, establishing himself as one of the team's best prospect for hitting, up until 1996, when he was transferred to the Minnesota Twins. Baseball America named Ortiz as the most exciting player of the Midwest League in 1996.
