Bettany

 Bettany Mary Hughes OBE FSA was born on May 27, 1967. She is an English historian and author who is an expert in the field of classical history. Her books are published and include myth and classical antiquity as well as the history of Istanbul. She is active in her efforts to promote the study of the classics in UK state schools. Hughes was made an OBE in 2019.In 2010 she gave the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual lecture "Ta Erotika The Things of Love", and in 2011 gave the Royal Television Society's Huw Wheldon Memorial Lecture. In it, she said that history on television is thriving and enjoying a new golden era. In 2011, she was chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction, the UK's only annual literary prize for novels written by women. Hughes is a patron of The Iris Project which promotes teaching Latin and Greek in UK public schools. Classics For All is her official patron. This campaign aims to revive ancient languages and civilisations to state schools. She serves as adviser to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation that aims to foster large-scale collaboration projects between East and West.
