His parents divorced shortly after. The brothers were raised, in somewhat poverty, primarily by their mother. David was a graduate of Saguaro High School, and then attended Scottsdale Community College, followed by Arizona State University. He received his degree from Arizona State University in the year 1986. He was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. The university was home to an improv comedy show called Farce Side Comedy hour that Spade was often seen performing in. Spade also performed stand-up during college at Greasy Anthony's pizza in Tempe.
