Mary Nabokova

Mary (Russian: Mashen'ka,"Masen'ka") (Russian: Mashen'ka,) is the first novel written by Vladimir Nabokov, first published under the pen name V. Sirin in 1926 by the Russian-language publisher "Slovo".Mary is the story of Lev Glebovich Ganin, a Russian exile and former White Guard Officer displaced by the Russian Revolution. Ganin now lives in Berlin with Klara an 18-year-old Russian girl, as well as Aleksey Ivanovich Alfyorov his neighbor. He encounters Ganin in an elevator that is dark and deteriorating in the beginning of the novel. Ganin learns from Alfyorov that Mary who was his first love, is now his wife. He also snaps photos. Once Ganin is aware of this, he has to end his relationship with his current partner, Lyudmila, and begins to become consumed by the memories of his experiences in Russia with Mary and her family, which Ganin says as "perhaps the most enjoyable times of his life". In awe of his dream of Mary and unwilling to let Alfyorov take her away, Ganin contrives to reunite with Mary and believes she is still in love with him.
